abstract = "The northeastern Par{\'a} is one of the first regions of the
Amazon that had received projects inducting human settlement.
These settlements, focusing their activities on intense
agricultural production, determined profound distortions on
pristine landscape structure and function, leading to extensive
natural resources degradation. Currently, the region is considered
as the most degraded landscape of the Amazon; that might be
regarded as a future portrait for another Amazon regions that are,
today, frontiers of rural development over forested areas. Thus,
this study was developed aimed at the study of land use and land
cover future scenarios for two watersheds located in northeastern
Amazon, state of Par{\'a}. The study adopted remote sensing
techniques to obtain information about the dynamics of land use
based on Landsat-TM image for the years 2004 and 2008. The dynamic
of existing land uses were studied, as well as its future trends,
emphasizing their likely consequences on natural resources. The
results present the scenarios generated for the year 2020 for the
two river basins studied; focusing the discussion on the impacts
that may arise from them. Poor forest cover area predicted by the
scenarios herein produced, highlights the need for projects that
take into account local economic and social activities, so that
production and conservation can be complementary and not opposing
                         forces.",
